Boundary Park Shooting: The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has launched an investigation following an officer-involved shooting in Surrey on Monday evening.
According to the Surrey Police Service, officers responded shortly after 7:30 p.m. on May 25 to a residence located in the 12200-block of Southpark Crescent in Surrey’s Boundary Park neighbourhood after receiving reports of a suspicious man in the area.
Police stated that upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered the man, who allegedly confronted them during the interaction. Authorities say SPS officers discharged their service-issued firearms during the incident. Following the shooting, officers and paramedics from BC Emergency Health Services immediately provided emergency medical treatment to the injured man before he was transported to hospital.
Officials have not yet confirmed the severity of the man’s injuries, though he was last reported to be receiving medical care.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., the civilian oversight agency responsible for investigating police-related incidents involving serious harm or death, has since assumed jurisdiction over the case. In its statement, the IIO confirmed that officers had attempted to detain the individual before “an interaction” occurred that resulted in police firing shots.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The IIO is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have relevant information to contact its Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or submit information through the official IIO BC website.
